Marshall Contemporary: Albarrán Cabrera: The Radiance of Paradise

The shine of paradise

Alternate with a deep and terrible night

Goethe, from Faust

Contemporary Marshall the gallery opens its fall program with an immersive exhibition featuring new color, platinum-palladium and metallic cyanotype prints from the famous spanish artist duo Angel Albarran and Anna cabrera. Looking at the world through philosophical eyes, Albarrán Cabrera’s work explores ideas of memory, time and cosmology, reflected through a wide range of printmaking techniques and historical references to art. While previous work framed these investigations from a human perspective, the duo’s most recent portfolio, “Nyx,” centers the Earth itself as the protagonist. Their new photographs offer geological and organic structures as a form of memory. An ever-balanced energy system that keeps detailed records of explosive changes and tedious incomprehensible transformations.

As before, form follows function in Albarrán Cabrera’s new work. The use of noble metals platinum, palladium and gold in the engraving process of much of the portfolio further anchors the work in an elemental and earthly context, while avoiding an overt display of metallic grandeur. . Instead, the subtle scale and materiality of their impressions become windows of quiet contemplation into an infinitely complex ecosystem. Their brightly colored works, shining from the inside with a core of gold leaf, celebrate a sublime life force emanating from the natural world. A persistent visual paradox surprises the viewer in most of the nearly thirty prints on display. Landscapes which at first glance seem consistent with the laws of physics, upon closer examination, reveal areas of doubt which, thanks to their alchemical processes, turn into wonders. The viewer must consider the limits of our own sensory data and how this can shape our map of the world around us.

Angel Albarran (born 1969, Barcelona) and Anna cabrera (born 1969, Seville) have been working together as art photographers since 1996. Albarrán Cabrera’s photographs have been exhibited in galleries and photo fairs in Spain, Japan, Switzerland, the United States. United, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Lebanon and Italy. Private collections and institutions that house their photographs include Hermès, the Goetz Collection, the German Bundestag Art Collection, Banco de Santander and De Nederlandsche Bank, among others.
