La Porte native novel pens based here
Cactus Moon Publishing press release
“The Vanishing Point”, located in La Porte, Indiana, deals with disappearance, trauma and memory, as well as the possibilities of redemption through a great American road trip and a glimpse of a childhood in the Midwest.
The book, written by Michael Backus, a native of The Door, is a meditation on Karma and how we lose and find ourselves again and again.
How did Henry Dolan end up here on his way to Santa Fe, New Mexico? The only place in the world he has vowed never to set foot again – the city where he lost his wife and daughter almost ten years ago. Maybe it’s the 11 pounds of high-quality weed in the trunk of his car that he can’t sell anywhere else. It may be something much deeper.
It’s time for him to finally meet his daughter and take into account the harm he has caused. Cadence, now 10, helps Henry open his long locked heart, exposing the wounds he has kept hidden. While healing, he finds a mysterious link between his daughter and his own tragic childhood …
Backus’ writing, both fiction and non-fiction, has appeared in Digging Through the Fat, Exquisite Corpse, Oyster River Pages, Prime Number Magazine, The Writer, The Sycamore Review, and many more. He teaches creative writing for Gotham Writer’s Workshop and Zoetrope Magazine. He resides in Albuquerque, NM
