Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue reunite for Neighbors finale | Neighbors

They were one of TV’s most popular couples, and now they’re getting back together, especially for you — or at least Neighbors viewers. Scott and Charlene, played by Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue, will return after more than 30 years for the show’s finale.

Jason Herbison, executive producer of the Australian soap opera, said the couple were “the ultimate Neighbors couple and it wouldn’t be fair to end the show without them”.

“We are thrilled to have Jason and Kylie come home to play a very special role in our series finale. It was an emotional experience for them, for us, and I’m sure it will be for our viewers.

Both Minogue and Donovan posted a photo of what appeared to be a preview of a Neighbors script to their Instagram accounts.

The couple will both return to the show, which first aired in 1985 and focuses on the fictional cul-de-sac community of Melbourne’s Ramsay Street, before it ceased production in June after being abandoned by its broadcaster.

Minogue and Donovan, who are both 53, played Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell until their departures in 1989 and 1988 respectively.

The pair were the power couple of Ramsay Street and a favorite with viewers.

Their wedding episode was watched by over 2 million Australian viewers when it first aired in 1987, then drew an audience of nearly 20 million when it aired in the UK in 1988, becoming one of the most-watched TV shows of the decade.

The announcement delighted fans of the series in the UK and Australia.

“It means so much!” a viewer wrote. “Without taking anything away from the incredible current cast, of course, but bringing the iconic Scott and Charlene back for the end is absolutely the icing on the cake!”

After the soap opera was halted, Minogue said she would “be eternally grateful for the experience and the friends I made on Neighbors.

“We had no idea the scale of the show and the passion with which viewers would take it to heart.”

Donovan said he thought the news was sad, adding, “I think it’s time to celebrate the neighbors.”

“It kept my family working for a long time, to be honest,” he said. “My daughter is there now, my dad was there. I think we should be grateful for what she’s given Australia, she’s given actors, producers, writers, directors.

Along with Minogue and Donovan, the soap opera helped launch the careers of Hollywood stars such as Margot Robbie and Liam Hemsworth.

In March, the soap announced that “following the loss of our key UK broadcast partner and despite a thorough search for alternative funding, we simply have no choice but to put the show on hold”. .

“We are truly sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and nearly 9,000 episodes aired, we must confirm that Neighbors will cease production in June,” a statement read.

“To our amazing and loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all of your messages and support and promise to end the show on an amazing note. From from now on, we celebrate the Neighbors.
