Ian Somerhalder, star of “The Vampire Diaries”, auditioned to play Christian Gray in “50 Shades of Gray”
Everyone’s favorite fictional vampire was almost the star of a big movie franchise. Ian Somerhalder, who starred in The vampire diary during all eight seasons, was one of the many actors who auditioned for the role of Christian Gray in 50 shades of Gray. However, he unfortunately did not get the role.

According to Insider, Ian Somerhalder originally auditioned to play Christian Gray in the 2015 film 50 shades of Gray but ultimately lost to Jamie Dornan. A few of the other actors the producers considered for the role were Chase Crawford, Ryan Gosling, and Charlie Hunnam.
Many fans of the book series, on which the film is based, have campaigned for Somerhalder to be cast as Christian in the Universal Pictures production. A fan-made trailer for the film starring Somerhalder and Alexis Bledel in the lead roles has even gone viral.
However, even though The vampire diary the actor did not get the role, Ian Somerhalder was not upset. He told HuffPost: âIt’s so funny you read these blogs: ‘Ian Somerhalder angry, livid, he’s not Christian Gray’ – I mean, no, no, no, there is Nothing of the sort.”
The actor added that while he was “incredibly grateful for all the support, all the cheers and love” from the people who wanted him to play Christian, the role would have taken him away from him. The vampire diary. “I’m on a TV show that runs 10 months a year,” he concluded.

Since Ian Somerhalder’s character Damon Salvatore was often the source of comic relief in The vampire diary, it makes sense that he is the one who reads 50 shades of Gray in the show. However, now that we know the actor’s story with the book and movie adaptation, all the dots connect.
In The vampire diary Season 8, Episode 1, as Damon and Enzo are killing to appease the Vault Monster, Damon reads the popular book. According to Insider, the producers included this detail as a nod to Somerhalder’s audition for the film.
In the scene, Damon defends his reading choices to Enzo. He says, “Hey, this is a really good book.”
The actor also tried for another vampire show
Speaking with Newsweek in 2009 about The vampire diary, Ian Somerhalder has revealed that he is a fan of vampires. The actor also mentioned that he auditioned for Real blood before booking The vampire diary.
âI am from New Orleans. There’s a lot of vampire mystique and mythology resonating out there, and I was mesmerized by that, âSomerhalder explained. âI’ve always wanted to play one. I auditioned for Real blood, I couldn’t convince [creator] Alan Ball, that was my role. And then I did not understand, and I was very disappointed. I couldn’t watch Real blood until now.”
