AZD-designed Oakland Township home has glass staircase
The Up North setting of this sophisticated contemporary home is 3½ acres of woodland, yet it is just a 5 mile drive from downtown Rochester.
This is the historic small town of Rochester, known for its rich concentration of restaurants, small shops, walking trails and civic life. It boasts of having been the first European colony formed in Oakland County around 1818 before Michigan became a state.
The house is nearly new – built in 2018 and designed by AZD Associates – the Bloomfield Hills firm known for its dramatic contemporary style. The current owners searched for it and found it already built.
“I’ve always looked for an AZD house, and it was like the perfect house for us,” said the wife of the couple who own it. “This is a very, very unique property.
On the one hand, its exterior walls can be bathed in colored lights – 600 color choices, she said. It makes decorating for the holidays much easier, she said. It is part of a very complete smart home system which is the preferred asset of these owners.
“You can control the property from anywhere in the world,” she said, “the music, the alarms, the doors, the gates, the lights, the blinds – all from the phone.”
“You can control your home to greet you when you get home. “
Or, dial in your ideal temperature and the type of spray that matches the mood for the day before you shower.
The architecture and smart home system make it a great place for parties On the second floor, above a garage, is a large open-air patio surrounded by a glass balustrade. Party people can dance outside under the stars with music and colorful lights.
Inside, the ground floor is wide open, with sightlines throughout. This is due in part to a blossoming that has become something of an AZD signature – a glass staircase.
It is a sculptural piece constructed of thick glass and placed in the center of the wide open floor. It is transparent except for its 20 steps. These are walnut plates, set with stainless steel bolts.
This glass, stainless steel and walnut structure rises to the second floor as well as to the lower walkout level.
On one side of these stairs, the long main floor contains the dramatic living room. This piece won first place in a competition for the best contemporary living room.
It has a walnut ceiling with a white sculpture floating below. It has huge windows on both sides and a long horizontal gas fireplace at the end.
At the other end of the long main floor is the kitchen and family room. The kitchen is sleek and chic – glossy white quartz, around the edges in a waterfall style, with contrasting walnut cabinetry – all personalized.
The fittings are from Grohe and Brizo. There are two sinks and two dishwashers, a Wolf conduction cooktop and a double oven.
There are two family rooms – on the ground floor and on the lower level. In each of them, a television is built into a wall which repeats the horizontal lines of the exterior. These are granite underneath and maintenance free faux wood above.
The front of the property is a portal with lighted pillars. The back is a three hole golf course.
Between these, there are too many assets to list.
For example, the lower part of the exterior is wrapped in limestone – not thin limestone tiles, but slabs that are 4 inches thick.
All bathroom, kitchen and other cabinetry were built for these spaces in walnut. They close smoothly and push open.
Garage bays for five cars are integrated in various places of the structure. Space for two more cars is in a separate building.
Almost all floors, except the carpeted rooms, are large white tiles, and they are all heated, in nine areas.
The house has three high efficiency furnaces, three air conditioners and two instantaneous water heaters. The lower level has a dry sauna.
The owners didn’t have time to set it up, but the lower level has wired space for a golf simulator or a theater.
